The mid-90's were a transformational period in American Poetry. And NEXT... MAGAZINE was there on the ground floor, covering all the dramatic changes, from slams to hip-hop to poetry on the internet. This book contains the best articles from that period, including coverage of the national slams, Taos Poetry Circus, and the United States of Poetry, as well as commentary and advice which remains relevant today. Also included are interviews with such figures as Henry Rollins, Patricia Smith, Ellyn Maybe, Gerald Locklin, and Miranda July.

In reading "News Clips & Ego Trips" -- a collection of articles and interviews from the late great NEXT... Magazine, a monthly newsmagazine covering poetry in Southern California from 1994 and 1998 -- I felt so many parts of my writer heart light up.

First, there was the historian part. Having written a history of the poetry slam movement (2008's "Words In Your Face"), I knew many (but not all!) of the poetry slam stories contained in this book, and was completely charmed and thrilled to be able to read about time from people who experienced it directly and -- most importantly -- during the time in which the events happened. It is interesting to see how time shapes what we remember, and how we remember it, and these first-person articles and interviews are going to be treasure trove for any slam historians, present or future.

Secondly, there was the teen slam poet in me. I started out in the NYC slam in 1998, just as NEXT... was wrapping up, and so many of the stories and people covered were people were legends in my mind. Reading their interviews, or reviews of their work / performances filled me with a wonderful thrill. So many of them -- including Patricia Smith, Beau Sia, Marc Smith, Miranda July, Mindy Nettifee, Jeff McDaniel, Henry Rollin and Derrick Brown, among others -- continue to rock audiences today, an incredible testament to the staying power of a movement that so many feared would be fleeting. If teen me could have gotten her hands on this book, she would been obsessed.

And then, there is just the regular me: the poet & poetry fan. My heart was lit up by this book's charm. The experience I can liken it best to is this: when you are a touring poet, you frequently crash with our poets. Said poets usually have an extensive chapbook & zine library out in plain sight, and when it is time to head to bed, you can't help but dive into it. This book is that like: like diving into a time capsule of zines & chapbooks from 1994-1998 SoCal poetry scene. It is uncut, unedited, uncommented on (no italics end notes say, 'You know this person is hugely important now, right?') and illustrated with an indie charm.

It should be said that there is not actual poetry in this book. But still, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to step into a time machine;to paraphrase "Portlandia" -- the dream of 90s slam poetry is alive in this book!
