A forbidden tower. Curious students. Disturbing discoveries.
Every boarding school has its secrets...

Senior Jack Hayes has a history of breaking the rules at St. Paul’s Catholic high school seminary, putting him squarely in the crosshairs of Father Lawrence “Spider” Webb, the tyrannical Dean of Students. While exploring the school’s forbidden bell tower, Jack and his best friend stumble upon troubling evidence of possible crimes. Unsure what to do, the two boys encounter a mysterious, reclusive old priest late one night who provides cryptic clues that help them uncover long-kept secrets about St. Paul’s and Father Webb. Even more shocking, their search for the truth leads to devastating consequences that threaten the school’s very existence.

The Chosen Few is a religious mystery and emotional coming-of-age tale with an inspirational ending. Experience young men studying for the priesthood at a twentieth-century Catholic seminary and their quest to unravel a life-changing mystery.

The Chosen Few A Catholic ComingofAge Mystery edition by Michael Sheehan Literature Fiction eBooks

An insider's look at a Catholic seminary for young men, this book centers on the friendship between two of the students, Jack and Patrick. The two of them have an unexplainable encounter with a mysterious priest who had once taught at the seminary, which leaves Patrick determined to solve a riddle about the school's past. This story is interspersed with highly detailed accounts of soccer games, which might be exciting to some but which frustrated me, as I wanted to get back to what I felt was the more important story. But the team dynamics give the reader more insight into the characters, so the games do serve a purpose. Religious conversations are woven throughout the story in a natural manner, nothing heavy handed or obvious, just what would be expected from boys contemplating entering the priesthood. Several of The Fathers (priests) are also well-developed and unique. There are a few loose ends - the secret that is uncovered is not entirely unexpected, but the boy involved is removed from the story without a satisfying explanation. The story is a little depressing but worth reading, and the ending is positive.

The Chosen Few A Catholic ComingofAge Mystery edition by Michael Sheehan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Liked the brotherhood depicted in the story. Easy to read. Especially enjoyed Fr. Martin and the part his character played.
Good look at modern catholic concerns!
A very good character-driven novel. It was a bit slow at times but overall I found it satisfying. There were a few grammatical/spelling errors but no interference with the story. NOW, the biggest problem was with the conversion to . Lots of errors, but I don't hold the author responsible. I would definitely recommend.
I had trouble figuring out what this book was about. Based on the title and the cover, I was expecting there to be some secret society headed by one of the teachers and open only to certain students that this professor chose. I didn't figure out the title until a few days after I'd finished the book--the chosen few being those who went on to be priests as best I can figure. The main character(s) of the book did not choose the priesthood.

Jack Hayes returns to his former high school as it is being demolished and reunites with a priest he knew then and they get to reminiscing about Jack's classmate and friend, Patrick.
I got this book for very personal reasons. I entered the college Seminary after earning my degree in Law Enforcement. I had been discerning the priesthood for several years, and made the plunge. While I ended up withdrawing for personal reasons, I resumed religious studies 14 years later...and was Ordained a Permanent Deacon in 2011.

This book was extremely well written. For those of us who once walked the halls of a seminary, I think we probably saw ourselves in one of the characters; I kept having flashbacks (good ones) of the seminary I attended. The book was spot on in many aspects of Seminary life.

Certainly worth the read!
Interesting story, with compelling and (mostly) likeable characters, but there are some seriously annoying formatting issues for the edition. The formatting errors (including inconsistent spacing after sentences, occasional missing and/or out of order words, 'stand alone' first letter in each chapter, and - most egregiously - random paragraph breaks) were distracting and took away for the overall enjoyable experience of reading this book. I'm still glad I read it, and would recommend it to others, with the formatting caveat. I would consider this a solid 4 star read had I not been repetitively jerked out of the book by those darn mid-sentence paragraph breaks!
Reading this book brings back memories regarding 2 of my 3
brothers who entered the seminary as high school freshmen.

This book consists of several young boys attending a high school
run by Sulpician priests in California. It was the choice of all the
boys by their 4th year whether they would stay at the seminary
to study for the priesthood or leave after graduation to pursue
a different career path.

With regards to my two brothers...both stayed through college
and ordination to the priesthood. My older brother left a few years
later and became a college professor. My younger brother has stayed
on as a priest heading up the Theology Dept. at the same seminary.
